Crossfit 101

If you haven't tried Crossfit, you’ll probably know someone who has. It’s taken the world by storm and it’s estimated that there are now over 11,000 Crossfit centres (known as ‘boxes’ ) in the world. So what is it and why the fuss?

CrossFit describes itself as ‘constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement’ and incorporates three different types of exercise;

1) Weight Lifting using barbells, kettle bells, dumbbells, sandbags etc.

2) Metabolic conditioning (METCON): for example running, rowing, cycling

3) Gymnastics or body weight conditioning: that is any body weight exercise like pull ups, pushups, handstands.

The benefits of this type of training include high calorie burn in a short period of time, muscle mass gain, increased bone and joint strength and mobility and reduced injury risk in day to day life due to focus on functional movement.

Another key aspect of Crossfit is the sense of community and the natural supportive yet competitive nature of the workout - and it’s been shown that having a good support system and working out with others is key when it comes to making lasting exercise habits.

So if you’re tempted to give it a try, check out www.crossfit.com and find your local box.
