A recent report from the Action on Sugar group in the UK found that some hot drinks in coffee shops contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar (more than 3 times the recommended maximum daily intake). The worst offenders were hot fruit drinks, chai lattes, hot chocolate and flavoured coffee drinks.
Calories consumed in drinks are important to watch, as unlike calories in solid food the body is less likely to ‘register’ these calories, leading to easier over-consumption of calories each day.
If you can’t give up your daily coffee or tea, make the healthier choice of a regular Americano, or white tea, an unsweetened fruit or mint tea and ask for a little honey if you need that sweet taste.
