Food focus: Coconut

One food that footballers and fans alike will be eating plenty of in Brazil is coconut! This is not a bad thing as all-things coconutty are being hailed as the latest super foods:

Coconut oil – despite being high in saturated fats, it’s been suggested that the medium-chain fatty acid lauric acid in coconut oil may have anti-microbial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. It has also been suggested that this type of fat may aid weight loss, although this is still unclear.

Coconut water – high in potassium, coconut water is now being used as a natural rehydration drink following exercise.

Coconut sugar – although it has a similar number of calories as table sugar or fructose, it has been claimed that coconut sugar has a much lower glycemic index (GI) than regular sugar, making it better for blood sugar control. It is also lower in fructose than cane sugar which may be better for overall health.
