How to improve your wellbeing

Sometimes life becomes so stressful that it starts to affect our health. We develop bad eating habits, bad sleeping habits and feel like the world is caving in on us. Stress affects everyone at some point so it’s important to take control of it. Don’t let stress get the better of you!

By doing these simple things each week, you can help to clear your mind, relax and de-stress.

 

Meditate

Just 10 minutes a day is all you need. Sit somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and try to focus on the moment. A common approach is to visualise each part of your body relaxing. Go outside

Getting some fresh air can really help you relax as nature is a well-known mood-booster. Skip the gym and instead go for a run, walk or bike ride in your local park. Many studies have shown that those people who live near to green spaces are happier, healthier and live longer.

 

Spend money

Don’t go overboard, but spending money (also known as retail therapy) can really put a smile on your face. But the best way to do it is to spend money on someone else. Shopping can make you forget your troubles (unless one of them is money) and purchasing and giving someone a gift that they love is proven to relieve stress and make you feel good. So get spending, but don’t break the bank. A small gift, even if it’s under $5, will still give you the same rush of happiness as a bigger gift.

 

Listen to calming music

If you’re allowed, try listening to slow, calming music at work. It can really lower your anxiety and stress levels, which is perfect if you’ve got a dreaded meeting to go to. Commutes are always stressful, especially when it’s busy or there are delays. So listen to calming music on your way to and from work so you don’t arrive stressed before the day begins!

 

Write down your thoughts

Don’t think of it as a ‘diary’, instead think of it as a ‘thought journal’. Write down your goals and aspirations and look at this list every now and then to remind yourself of where you’re going. It’s good to dream and be ambitious so getting a clear view of what you want can really help put things into perspective. If you’re working hard, write down the reasons why you do it and remind yourself when you’re feeling down. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help relieve stress. So don’t hold on to feelings, instead let them out, but if you don’t want to talk about them, a journal is the perfect release.
