Junk food

It’s no secret that junk food is somewhat lacking in nutritional value – ‘junk’ doesn’t refer to the flavour. Yet every day across the world people line up at the counters, hand over their cash and are instantly presented with a meal.

For some people it’s the convenience of having food prepared for you, for others it’s the time saved not putting together their own lunch; and for many it’s simply the fact that junk food is loaded with enough salt and fat that it seems delicious. But those short term reasons for regularly ordering junk food brings serious long term health problems.

 

We’ve known for a long time that junk food poses health risks, and striving to improve on poor nutrition has been the burden of health advisers and the fast food companies for years. Despite recent improvements to fast food menus, researchers have revealed that 35% of heart attacks globally are linked to diets reliant on fried food, salty snacks and meat. In contrast, people who avoided reliance on junk food and ate more fruit and vegetables had a 30% lower risk of heart attack compared to people who didn’t eat fruit and vegetables.

 

So, the next time you’re short on time and want a quick food fix, stay away from the fast food and find a healthy alternative instead! The flavours can be as rich and filling as in junk food, but they won’t put you in an early grave!
