Winter health tips

Don't let your healthy habits hibernate for the winter! Ward off illness and the winter blues with these top tips to stay healthy in the colder months:

1)  Drink plenty of hot drinks

Coffee, milky tea and hot chocolate aren’t great when you drink them in large quantities. When you need a caffeine fix, opt for green tea with lemon – it contains caffeine and the lemon provides a natural ‘light up’. Sugars, fats and caffeine can take a toll on your health though so sometimes try caffeine free, herbal drinks such as red bush, chamomile or lemon and ginger tea.

3)  Layer up!

Wear several light layers, not one heavy piece of clothing. Multiple layers are the most effective at trapping heat and keeping you warm.

4)  Step outside

Go outside and soak up as much daylight as possible. Seasonal affective disorder, in which healthy people develop depressive symptoms over the winter, is thought to affect 2 million people in the UK. Evidence suggests that daylight exposure is key in combatting SAD.

5)  Sleep tight

Use the long nights to catch up on lost sleep. There’s no better time to assume a state of semi-hibernation! If you’re feeling the cold, invest in a pair of thick, comfy socks – don’t worry, no-one will see you and if your partner judges, get him/her a pair and watch the addiction start!

6)  Eat healthily

It’s easy to want to snack away during the cold days, but eating plenty of fruit and veg will ensure your immune system stays on top form. Why not try making your own vegetable soups.

Follow these tips, keep warm and you might just make it to spring without getting ill! If you have any other tips and tricks for staying healthy over winter, let us know #SiSUWellness.
