Lose weight by eating breakfast

Last Updated: 16 December 2018

Lose weight by eating breakfast

The age old saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” really is accurate! Eating breakfast stabilises blood sugar levels, which regulate appetite and energy leading to healthy food consumption for the rest of the day.

Apart from keeping your blood sugar levels and appetite under-control, eating breakfast feeds your brain so that you are more productive in the mornings at work, and have an improved retention of information.

Doctors in the US found that people who ate breakfast every day were a third less likely to be obese compared to those who skipped the meal. Furthermore, they were half as likely to develop diabetes, or have high cholesterol. They found that those who skip breakfast consume 40% more sweets, 55% more soft drinks, and 45% fewer vegetables.

So, what does this mean for you?

These findings prove that skipping breakfast is no way to lose weight – you should be focusing on eating the right food at the right time. To help you achieve better productivity and a healthier lifestyle, here are some tips to ensure that you are getting the most from breakfast:

  • Avoid a sugary start to the day. Breakfast foods such as sugary cereals and sweet croissants will give you a sugar high and then the inevitable crash. This crash can affect your mood, concentration levels and cue you to reach for a snack.

  • If you don’t have time to eat at home in the mornings, have some cereal at work for when you arrive.

  • Always have some nuts and fruit in the cupboard in case you are short of time in the mornings. They are also great for snacking as they’re healthy and filling!
