Coconut water

You may not be able to fly off to the Caribbean and sunbathe with a straw in a coconut, but you can reap the health benefits of coconut water at home. Since Madonna invested in Vita Coco, the American coconut water company has become a health craze amongst celebrities, dieters, and athletes alike. It has acquired a reputation for being able to improve circulation, slow aging, boost immunity, and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.

Although official medical research does not support that coconut water prevents/cures this list of diseases, it is clear that coconut water is good for you as it is 99% fat free, low in sugar and carbs, and high in potassium.

It is promoted by numerous athletes as well as celebrities as a natural isotonic drink which re-hydrates your body before, during and after exercise. Sodium can be added to the drink in order to make it even more effective as a sports drink. It is so highly recommended that it is becoming known as the best natural sports drink.

With so many health benefits I thought that I’d better try this famous health drink. I found that it was revitalizing and juicy, and the knowledge of the goodness it contained as well as the lack of fat and calories in it made it taste even better.

It is important to note that coconut water is not the same as coconut milk as coconut milkin extracted from ripened coconuts so is thicker and higher in fat and calories. Coconut water however is from unripened coconuts and thus far lower in fat and calories.

You can purchase coconut water in most food shops, or you can buy it online in bulk. If you want a more exotic experience, pop to a street market where you may be able to find a stall that sells fresh coconut which you sip through a straw.
